You’re Not Crazy. Everyone “hears" voices in their heads.

Jacob’s Dream Painting by Addie Hirschten

There are definitely a few themes that I hear repeatedly from people. One of those themes is “I feel like I’m crazy.” People often feel this way because of the voices in their heads, telling them conflicting messages. People are often surprised to hear that this is totally normal! All people I know, myself included, “hear” voices in their heads. We all have parts of ourselves that like to chime in and get our attention. Rather than feeling like we’re “crazy”, it’s important to know where these messages are coming from.

Oftentimes, people have a few different voices in their heads. The most well-known voice seems to be the voice of the inner critic, but there can be other voices too. Doing “parts” work can help us identify the parts of ourselves, bringing what is in the subconscious into conscious awareness. Internal Family Systems has recently popularized the system of identifying and working with these different aspects of ourselves. I did similar “parts” work years ago. I can’t tell you how liberating and relieving it was for me to finally be free of that voice inside my head that had been pretty mean to me for most of my life. It went from being a dominant voice in my head, to one I next to never hear anymore. That is inner freedom and peace!

Do you have a voice in your head that won’t quit? Do you want to learn how to be free from it? The first step is to become aware of it, learn more about it, and identify where it came from and what it needs. Eventually, it can be healed or integrated and our relationship with ourselves can be transformed into a more harmonious inner experience. If you want help with this process, let’s talk. I’m here for you. You can book a time with me and we can get to work.
